RISING UP:  Challenging Violence Against Women & LGBTQ Communities

FEBRUARY 14, 2015

Session 1: 11:30 AM  | Session 2: 12:30 PM

For women around the world, the struggle against violence is a stark reality.  Faced with a worsening economic crisis and increased militarization in the Philippines, Filipinas are becoming more vulnerable to systemic gender-based violence.  As Filipinos/as in the United States, what can we do to address the suffering of Filipina migrant workers, to end sex trafficking, and to fight against the many injustices that Filipinas face everyday?

Through multimedia, interactive discussion, and creative writing, join GABRIELA-Los Angeles in learning more about how Filipina women are woven into a long history of resistance and organizing for social change.  Hear the story of Jennifer Laude, a 26-year old Filipino transgender woman who lost her life as a result of systemic violence against women, LGBTQ, and gender-nonconforming people and discover the strength of women’s organizing in demanding justice for Jennifer and all victims of state-violence.  This February 14th also marks an international day of action for “One Billion Rising,” a worldwide platform to highlight the ongoing hardship, struggle and violence Filipina women face.  Come share your voices and honor Filipina women and LGBTQ folks building a growing movement for liberation.
